Denis Delja

Denis Delja is a trial lawyer in Monterey, California, and one half of Delja & Delja | Injury Attorneys, a husband-and-wife personal injury practice he runs with his wife, Tara Delja. Delja grew up in Southern California, in the San Fernando Valley, raised on a steady diet of the classic Westerns of the 1950s and 1960s. He carried that ethos into his education, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Loyola Marymount University and then turning down a full scholarship to Loyola’s law school to attend Yale Law School, where he was among the first Loyola students to be admitted. Having never visited the campus, he packed up and drove across the country to New Haven, Connecticut, arriving for the first time when he moved in.

Delja began his career in litigation at large firms, including Arnold & Porter, representing corporations such as Monsanto and Visa. The corporate track offered a large salary but little courtroom work, and a pro bono opportunity to co-chair a murder trial convinced him that representing individual clients in the courtroom was what he wanted to do. He left corporate litigation without another job lined up and moved to the plaintiff’s side, working at personal injury and plaintiff’s class-action firms in Washington, D.C., and then in the Los Angeles area. Seeking a better quality of life away from the commute, he joined a Monterey firm, where he practiced for about eight years.

When that firm changed direction after its founder retired, Delja and his wife, Tara Delja, an attorney he met at a personal injury firm where they both worked, left to found Delja & Delja | Injury Attorneys. The practice is deliberately small, taking a selective number of cases so that clients work directly with the attorneys rather than case managers or file handlers. The firm secured its first seven-figure result in a premises liability case Delja took over roughly five months before trial, after the client had cycled through prior attorneys who were signaling to the insurer that they would not try the case. The client, a Gulf War combat veteran, had stepped through a rotted board on an apartment stairway landing and injured his knee, and the defense denied both liability and causation. Delja and his wife deposed the landlord, the workers who had repaired the stairway, and the treating physicians, filed roughly fifteen motions in limine, and served a statutory settlement demand. Five days before trial, the case settled for one million dollars plus the client’s costs.

Over the course of their careers, Delja and his firm report more than ninety million dollars in combined verdicts and settlements. Documented results include a $21.5 million jury verdict in a Madera County auto accident, a $13.3 million settlement in a Santa Clara County commercial vehicle case, a $7.8 million settlement in a Monterey County school negligence matter, and a $5.2 million settlement for a child struck by a car in Santa Cruz County. Delja is a member of The National Trial Lawyers and the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles.

Delja treats the emotional dimension of representing injured people and grieving families as central to the work rather than something to guard against. He has spoken about handing a father a seven-figure check after the loss of a son and the discomfort of making a living from such loss, and he believes that sharing in a client’s grief, rather than treating cases as commodities, is what distinguishes good lawyers from the ambulance-chaser stereotype.
