I talk to my client's families, I talk to their kids. My clients have my cell phone number and I am happy to talk to them at all hours of the day and night. When I go to the negotiating table or the courtroom I am thinking of their families.

Jake Plattenberger is a partner at TorHoerman Law LLC in Chicago, Illinois, and a trial lawyer whose practice is devoted to trying complex cases before juries. He focuses on product liability, toxic exposure and catastrophic injury claims, has tried more than 40 cases to verdict in state and federal courts in several states, and is often brought in by other firms to try their cases.

Plattenberger won a $495 million verdict against Abbott Laboratories, including $400 million in punitive damages, in a case alleging that preterm infant formula contributed to necrotizing enterocolitis; Courtroom View Network ranked it the top plaintiff’s verdict of 2024. His other verdicts include $25 million against Conagra Foods in Los Angeles over cooking spray that caused severe lung damage, $25 million against a pool manufacturer for a toddler’s death, and $4.4 million against a flavoring manufacturer in Ohio, the first plaintiff’s verdict in that state under the knowing-exposure exception to the workers’ compensation bar.

He has served on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in the Incretin Mimetics MDL and as co-chair of the science committee in California’s Juul e-cigarette coordinated proceeding. He received the Excellence in Trial award from the Mass Torts Made Perfect conference in 2024 and was named to the Lawdragon 500 Leading Plaintiff Consumer Lawyers in 2025. A Chicago native, he lectures on trial advocacy and persuasion.
