Benjamin H. Carney is a partner at Gordon, Wolf & Carney, Chtd. in Hunt Valley, Maryland, where he represents individual consumers in class action litigation against large companies. His cases have recovered tens of millions of dollars for many thousands of people, and courts have certified him as class counsel in more than 20 cases.
Carney began litigating consumer protection claims as a student attorney, taking matters through trial and appeal before he graduated, and received the Ward, Kershaw & Minton Clinical Advocacy Prize in 2003. Early in his career he was among the first Maryland lawyers to challenge foreclosure rescue scams. Less than two years after law school, he filed a series of cases attacking defective vehicle repossession notices, litigation that has so far produced more than $70 million in relief for Maryland consumers.
A Maryland native who graduated from Suitland High School in Prince George’s County, Carney earned his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1999 and worked on writing and production for PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer before law school. He received his J.D. from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 2004. He is a fellow of the Maryland Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation, and Best Lawyers named him its 2024 Baltimore Lawyer of the Year for Mass Tort Litigation/Class Actions.
