Gray Broughton

Gray Broughton attended Davidson College on an Army ROTC scholarship, graduated in 1998 and earned his J.D. from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 2001. Instead of private practice, he spent more than four years as an Army JAG officer, then about nine years in commercial litigation and white collar defense. His turn toward plaintiff work came when the young son of a veteran he had served with lost a leg and suffered a brain injury in a collision; Gray took the case, his first personal injury matter.

As a Judge Advocate General officer, Gray served with the Eighth Army in South Korea and V Corps in Heidelberg, Germany, and deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in late 2003 and early 2004. He practiced operational law, advising commanders on rules of engagement and reviewing airstrikes, and also served as a prosecutor. He received the Bronze Star Medal and the German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency. His firm today is veteran-led; law partner Sharif Gray is also a former prosecutor and military veteran.

In February 2026, a Winchester Circuit Court jury returned a $20 million verdict in Clark v. Grafton School Inc. for a 13-year-old boy who was physically abused while living at a psychiatric residential treatment facility. Four other firms had passed on the case. Gray describes his approach as asking what was taken from a person and how they can be fully and fairly compensated for the loss. “If the game is on the line, I trust me. I’ll take the shot,” he says.

Gray obtained a $10 million settlement for a 7-year-old boy who suffered a brain injury and an above-knee amputation when a pickup towing a utility trailer rear-ended his family’s vehicle, resolved shortly after suit was filed. In a one-day Henrico Circuit Court trial over a rotator cuff torn in a sideswipe collision, the jury returned $373,922 after the insurer’s best offer was $20,000. He has been named to Virginia Super Lawyers, holds a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent rating and appears in Best Lawyers and Virginia Business’ Virginia Legal Elite.
